My Morning Routine

03/23/2009

I struggle with beginning my days in a haphazard way. I normally use the excuse that since both of our children still get up at night, whether to nurse or use the potty, I’m never quite sure when I’ll be getting up so I can’t make a definite schedule. However, just because I might not know what time my morning will start, doesn’t mean I can’t have a plan of action for getting it started on the right foot.

I know for me, one of the best ways to get my morning started right actually takes place before I go to bed. If I take a few extra minutes to straighten the house and do the dishes at night, my mood and outlook is so much better in the morning. It’s amazing what waking up to a tidy home can do for you.

So, as part of my commitment to starting my day right, I’m going to be working on tidying up the house before I go to bed. Specifically, I’m going to make sure these things are complete:

1. Living Room floor cleaned up
2. Table cleared off (or at least all of the papers put into one pile)
3. Dishes washed and in drying rack

In the morning, I’ll be working on these 5 things:

1. Make bed
2. Put dishes away
3. Make & eat breakfast
4. Bible Time with children
5. Clean one room (we have 5 rooms & I clean one room each weekday)

Are you looking for a little more order as you begin your day? Then head on over to Tammy’s to read about implementing a morning routine.

Do you think my plan is realistic? Do you abide by a morning routine? I’d love your comments and feedback!

I clean one room a day as well and it really helps to keep me from getting overwhelmed. I find that if I take a few minuted before bed (assuming I’m not an exhausted walking zombie)to pick up the living room, fold the blankets/quilts and get any dirty dishes in the sink, I have a much better start to my morning as well. Blessings!

Hi, I have two small children (4 & 18mo.) I noticed in your routine that you include Bible time each morning with the kids. Can you tell me what that looks like… do you just read scripture or is it Bible stories for kids? I'm trying to get better about having specific Bible training with our kids, but I'm not sure how to start.

    Thanks for any info.

My morning routine is more of run around like a nut and hope you don’t forget anything. Of course that means I usually do forget something (like my lunch today). I really need to work on creating a morning routine.

I had to throw out the schedule as I let my children’s bodies wake themselves up so I have a chart of things they have to accomplish in the morning, afternoon, and before going to bed. Once they get it done they get to put a smiley face on it, so instead of saying are your chores up I get to say, are all your smilies up yet. We do very well and I don’t stress about a time line!!!! happy ubp

Your plan sounds realistic to me. It’s hard when your children are small. But, I have teenagers and they come home, make a giant mess, and then leave without cleaning it up. So, it doesn’t really get any easier…it’s just that the circumstances change.

Yep! Your routine is definitely doable. I’m trying to get my kids to help with the tidying up before going to bed…. create that habit while they are young, so it will be something they just do…. I hope:)

    Enjoy the party!!

I think it sounds like a great plan! Your nightly rountine sounds very similar to mine. Doesn’t it make the mornings so much easier?

Great plan! I have to plan….or nothing would get done. I have a weekly planner and I look through it on Sunday night and get my thoughts together on how to improve my days.

Your plan of action for getting your morning started on the right foot sounds great – especially being aware of how the hours on the evening before impact it!

I think your plan for a routine is certainly realistic. I try very hard to have dishes out of the sink and the house at least generally straight before I go to bed. My mornings get a bit hectic, but I like your idea of concentrating on a few basic things to get accomplished.

Yes, starting the day off clean and tidy is a huge help to the brain! It sounds like you have a very workable plan. It is hard when children are up at night or if you have a child who wakes up when you get out of bed (speaking from experience), but as long as your keep it flexible, you should be fine. And God will be with you all the way!
