Loving My Mombo Nursing Pillow

I was so excited when I discovered the Mombo nursing pillow. I have another nursing pillow from a different company that I've used for four babies now and lets just say it's seen better days.

I thought that the Mombo would be almost identical to my older nursing pillow, but I was wrong. Mombo offers a better nursing experience through it's unique design and then serves double duty as a soft infant positioner.

While the shape is fairly similar, I prefer the tighter curve of the Mombo. With the other nursing pillow I always needed an additional throw pillow to get the baby in the correct position, but the more form fitting Mombo solves that issue.

I also love the more supportive firm side! It reminds me of a nursing pillow I used with my first when I went to visit a hospital lactation consultant. It really helps to keep the baby up where they need to be while nursing.

The Mombo Nursing Pillow also includes a removeable vibration unit. This soothing vibration is a wonderful addition when using the pillow as a soft nesting place for an infant.

5 Minute Grain-Free, Dairy-Free, Honey-Sweetened Muffins

I’m so excited about these muffins that it’s really not even funny We’re still gluten and dairy free in our home and it’s so nice to find a baked goods recipe that doesn’t require a lot of expensive ingredients!

These muffins also mix up really quickly in the food processor (you can also use a blender) and there are plenty of steps the kids can do on their own. In fact, after a few practice runs, this is another job that will be passed on to our kids.

Simply dump everything into the food processor and blend it up.

Then spoon the batter into greased or lined muffin cups and add your favorite topping. We added a little shredded coconut to the top of each muffin and then lightly stirred to help the coconut mix in a little.

You can easily have these muffins ready for the oven in 5 minutes. Even with lots of little helpers we had these ready to go in just over 10 minutes.

Look how nice and fluffy they turned out! I’m still amazed that these muffins contain no flour.

I’m so thankful Crystal introduced me to these muffins last week (well not personally, but she blogged about them)!

Teaching Kids the Value of Work

When your home is filled with little ones it can be easy to squeeze housework and other chores into the few precious hours when the children are asleep. After all, everyone knows you can complete the task quicker without the assistance of your little helpers.

There’s only one problem with that scenario–the kids don’t learn how to do the work themselves. Or at least they don’t learn how to do it until they’re too old to want to learn how to do it.

While teaching young children to work is in fact a lot of work for us as parents, from everything we’ve seen, heard, and experienced, it’s much better than trying to teach them to work when they’re older and are use to being waited on hand-and-foot.

I recently finished reading an encouraging book called Cleaning House: A Mom’s 12 -Month Experiment to Rid Her Home of Youth Entitlement by Kay Wills Wyma. In this book, Kay lays out how her children had become completely entitled because of the way she and her husband stepped in to do everything for them and make their lives easy. She reveals how this behavior led her children to expect clean clothes to automatically appear in their drawers and yummy food to magically show up on the table at every meal.

If you want your children to be more responsible, more joyful, more generous and more grateful, some good, old-fashion work might be just the thing you need to bless them with!

I find it so interesting, in our world where work is often seen as drudgery, that work was actually given to us as a gift from God. Our loving father knows that we connect to his heart more when we are deep in hard work than when we are left to our own pleasure seeking. Nothing brings about a sense of significance like hard, meaningful work.

Cleaning House is a poignant reminder of how important it is to set the foundation of hard work in the early years but also offers encouragement and hope to parents who already find themselves in the middle of raising tweens and teens.

Kay’s insight and humor encourages parents to introduce their kids to basic life skills and challenges families to realize that children, even young children, are capable of working and making real contributions to those around them.

While I think our children do help quite a bit around the house, reading Cleaning House opened my eyes to ways we step in and make our kids’ lives easy. It has also challenged us to take another hard look at the responsibilities we are giving to each child.

One way we’re incorporating what we learned from this book is by allowing our children to take turns making breakfast. They have always helped us make breakfast, but now they are completing the process all by themselves (still with our supervision, of course).

As a little inspiration, here’s a video of our 3-year-old making scrambled eggs almost entirely by herself.

Does the kitchen get a little messier? Yes! Do the eggs get a little overcooked? Yes! Is the pan harder to get clean after she cooks? Yes! But I’m considering it well worth it to work myself out of the job of breakfast cook in the next couple of years
